New type of packaging

Following successful testing, SIBUR’s facility in Tomsk is launching commercial production of bags from recycled materials.

Tomskneftekhim, SIBUR’s Tomsk-based facility and one of Russia’s largest polymer producers, is introducing a new type of packaging that involves recycled materials. With a capacity of up to 25 kg, the new form, fill and seal (FFS) bags are designed for transport and retail packaging of bulk petrochemical products made by Tomskneftekhim.

In early 2020, the Company produced a test batch of 3,200 bags using recycled materials. The packaging underwent successful testing and received positive feedback from SIBUR’s customers. The extended batch will include ca. 40,000 bags that contain 15% recycled materials (35% of recyclables are in the central layer of the multi-layer bag).

At the current stage, the recycled components are process waste from Tomskneftekhim’s production lines. Going forward, the Company has a bolder ambition to use as recyclable feedstock the FFS bags returned by BIAXPLEN and other customers that rely on SIBUR’s products. This will help create a circular economy.

“We are planning to successfully complete the extended testing phase. If our customers are happy, we will be able to continue improving our production chains by making first-ever use of waste without compromising product quality. That will be a step towards reducing the volume of primary polymers in packaging and a way to promote a circular economy,” said Konstantin Koryakin, Deputy Chief Production Engineer at Tomskneftekhim.
