Science Slam is a science promotion initiative, which despite a relatively short history has won the attention from the audience across the globe. These events bring together researchers from various areas who are invited to give a ten-minute talk on topical ideas or their own research results in an creative and entertaining way. Science stand-ups are running across 25 Russian regions, engaging an increasing number of participants.

On 15 March, Moscow's Ministerstvo loft area became a venue for the first Chemistry Slam attended by SIBUR. The slammers were Dmitry Kazantsev, Roman Gulyaev, Artem Oganov, Alexandre Litvinov and Denis Chusov. The guest speaker who delivered an opener slam was Mikhail Nechaev, a professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a senior researcher at the Chemistry Department, Lomonosov Moscow State University. The event staged by SIBUR’s Corporate R&D Centre and University saw over 100 attendees, including SIBUR’s employees, customers, partners, and representatives of the scientific community.

SIBUR is an active contributor to the development of infrastructure to collect and recycle waste. Among other things, the participants touched upon #PolymerFormula and Plastic Recycling, joint initiatives run by SIBUR, the Tobolsk City Administration and Tyumen Polymer Plant. As part of those, local residents collected several tonnes of waste for recycling. On SIBUR's initiative, the city administration put in place 50 bins for plastic waste.

There are different ways to reduce environmental impact which should focus on leveraging by-products rather than just collecting and recycling (for example, Denis Chusov, a leader of the effective catalysis team at A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds, talked on the use of carbon monoxide). That said, anyone can minimise environmental impact by slightly adjusting their household habits. One of the topics on the battle's environmental agenda was the right use of laundry detergents. Today’s household chemicals should be both effective and environmentally friendly, given that surfactants are discharged into sewerage. The event participants were advised to pay more attention to the laundry process by reading instructions on clothes care labels and on detergent packages, dosing powder detergents more carefully (more does not mean better) and using an automatic washing mode. Interestingly, Alexandre Litvinov, the presenter of this report, was picked by the audience as the winner.

There were two reasons for choosing this format: first, science battles are gaining traction, and secondly, they serve to explain hard scientific facts in a fun way. On the one hand, we promote science, while on the other, we keep our listeners focused. SIBUR sees this event as an opportunity to educate its customers and partners on important scientific developments, environmentally friendly solutions and novel polymer materials,” says Andrey Grachev, Head at SIBUR’s Corporate R&D.
