Pioneering 2-EHA in Russia

SIBUR launches production of the key component for varnishes and adhesives in Dzerzhinsk.

SIBUR has launched Russia’s first 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) production at the Dzerzhinsk site. 2-EHA is used to manufacture premium paint and varnish products, improving their waterproof, adhesive and sun resistance properties. Acrylic paint produced using 2-EHA can even be applied at temperatures below zero. This chemical is also used to manufacture instant pressure-sensitive compound adhesives.

An operational unit producing butyl acrylate, a chemical used in manufacturing acrylic emulsions and adhesives, was upgraded to accommodate 2-EHA production, and to make the migration possible, special technologies were designed. This project involved staff from the site and from SIBUR's Tomsk-based corporate R&D Centre NIOST.

Anastasia Bobrikova, head of the Laboratory for Petrochemical Synthesis, said that it was the first time SIBUR set up the full cycle for a new organic synthesis product: from lab to plant. “The launch of 2-EHA production is a milestone in our site’s strategy of ramping up output and expanding the product range. The new product will ensure higher stability in the face of changing demand,” said Alexander Proskurin, General Director of the Dzerzhinsk site.
