Tobolsk facility to launch maleic anhydride production fully covering domestic demand.

SIBUR has signed an agreement with CONSER, an Italian process engineering design company, to acquire a licence for maleic anhydride (MAN) production technology for its Tobolsk facility. MAN is required to produce unsaturated polyester resins that are used in the construction, agricultural, automotive, pharmaceutical and many other industries. It serves as feedstock for films, synthetic fibres, detergents, fuel components and oils. MAN improves the quality of end products, e.g., enhances their waterproof properties, resistance to temperature stress and mechanical impacts.

MAN is currently not produced in Russia. The Tobolsk facility’s target output is 45 ktpa, which covers 100% of the domestic demand. SIBUR is also considering exports to Europe and the Middle East. There are two ways to produce MAN: from benzene (China’s method) or butane (USA, Europe). SIBUR will use butane, which is also manufactured by the Tobolsk facility.

CONSER was chosen as the licensor for the project thanks to its cutting-edge MAN production technology. “We focused on the technology's track record of success and the high quality of the end product,” said Vladimir Razumov, Deputy Chairman of SIBUR's Management Board. CONSER’s operations span over 45 countries, and this is the company’s first partnership with SIBUR, a key player in the Russian market. Flavio Simola, CEO of CONSER, expressed hopes for a strong and lasting business relationship with SIBUR.
