SIBUR joins CEFLEX

Participation in the initiative is another step towards the circular economy.

CEFLEX is a collaborative initiative of over a hundred European companies to ensure full lifecycle management of packaging, fr om production, consumption and waste collection to waste management and recycling.

CEFLEX’s current declared objectives include, among others, implementing flexible packaging handling guidelines that would be recognised in all European countries, developing design recommendations for infrastructure to collect, sort and recycle flexible packaging, and reviewing and rolling out business cases in which packaging materials can be returned to the economy.

By collaborating with CEFLEX, SIBUR gains access to a wide range of waste management solutions specific to the flexible packaging industry, as well as to a number of initiatives to promote sustainability. SIBUR will become a part of a single information environment shared with many of its partners and competitors, and will take the opportunity to discuss the state of the industry and its regulation, gain insights into the statistical information, databases and positions of other initiative members and follow CEFLEX’s activities. This will help SIBUR boost its profile as a responsible supplier.

SIBUR is already a member of a number of international environmental initiatives, including Responsible Care, the REACH Regulation and the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC). In 2018, SIBUR joined Operation Clean Sweep – a PlasticsEurope initiative aimed at preventing polymer particles from entering the environment during production and logistics operations.

SIBUR operates company-owned R&D centres – NIOST in Tomsk and PolyLab in Skolkovo – wh ere experts explore polymer properties, develop new and improve existing formulations, and run feasibility tests for new polymer solutions that would incorporate recycled feedstock.

“Plastic is a product that is almost fully recyclable. So, a stronger focus on recycling rather than phasing out plastics altogether is the key to building a circular economy,” commented Maxim Remchukov, Sustainable Development Director at SIBUR.
