Remezov Airport officially opens

Tobolsk Airport, which SIBUR helped to build through a partnership with the Tyumen Region, is set to give a boost to tourism and the local economy.

The airport sits 30 kilometres away from Tobolsk and was built in a record-breaking timeframe of just two years. SIBUR invested around RUB 19 billion into the construction of a 2,400-metre-long runway, a passenger terminal and other ground infrastructure. The airport capacity is up to 380 passengers per hour. It is capable of handling and servicing aircraft such as the SSJ100, Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320/321. Local residents decided to name the airport after the famous Siberian cartographer, architect and engineer Semyon Remezov, with over 76% of respondents choosing this name in a poll.

At the grand opening of the Remezov Airport terminal, Governor of the Tyumen Region Alexander Moor said that this day would go down in the history of the city, the region and the country, as the new airport will become a new driver of tourism and economic growth.

Alexander Neradko, Head of the Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsiya), praised the incredible pace of construction of the airport, which exceeded all expectations. “We have never seen such a rapid pace of construction in the recent history of Russian aviation,” he said. “This airport is a testament to the fact that SIBUR is a socially responsible company. An airport is always a point of attraction and development, creating new opportunities for economic, business and tourism growth.”

Mikhail Karisalov, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of SIBUR LLC, explained the key concepts that the Company sought to address by throwing its weight behind the project. These are safety, quality of life, connectivity to other regions, and speed of travel. “I very much expect that from this point forward, the professional community that deals with tourism, history and culture will pick up the initiative and give life to a whole new set of concepts for Tobolsk, allowing as many people as possible to see the city as a real gem, as a city with almost 450 years of history, and fall in love with this place,” Mr Karisalov added.

The passengers of the inaugural flight were given a tour of the city’s main tourist attractions, as well as ZapSibNeftekhim. Captain Timur Tokzhanov, who piloted the plane into Tobolsk, rated the new airport’s runway 10/10, pointing out that he had only come across this level of airfield quality a handful of times throughout his ten-year career.

With the launch of scheduled flights, which commenced in the evening of 16 October, the regional government hopes to attract more travellers, and promote different types of tourism, for example industrial and culinary tourism.
