Not a ban but a call for recycling

SIBUR comments on Rospotrebnadzor's proposal to cut plastic bag production.


In October, Rospotrebnadzor (Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare) proposed to restrict production of single-use plastic bags. The draft amendments to the Federal Law On Production and Consumption Wastes are in progress. The initiative will eventually force manufacturers to cut down production and encourage consumers to reuse plastic bags. In addition, Rospotrebnadzor suggests that biodegradable packaging technology be developed.

There should not be a ban but a search for ways to promote waste sorting and recycling.

Maxim Remchukov, Sustainable Development Director at SIBUR, shared insights on recycling as a potential solution to waste problem in an interview with RBC's What Does It Mean? show. According to Maxim, there should not be a ban but a search for ways to promote waste sorting and recycling.

“Any type of plastic, once it becomes waste, can be recycled either mechanically or chemically. The potential is huge. The main challenge is to arrange separate collection of waste plastic of any quality. If this is solved, mechanical or chemical recycling of used plastic will provide feedstock and return to the beginning of the production cycle,” said Maxim Remchukov.
