Vivilen – a new lease of a polymer life

SIBUR is launching Vivilen brand of products containing recycled waste.

Vivilen is a unique SIBUR product for the Russian market. It is a mix of high-quality primary feedstock and recycled polymers. The compounds formulations were developed and tested on production lines at SIBUR’s R&D PolyLab facility and at some processing companies.

By creating Vivilen, we are offering a different product to our innovative partners: not a granule with a new set of features, but a sound platform for both forming a response to the public demand for green solutions, and achieving the corporate sustainable development targets.

Vivo in Latin translates as “to live”. An innovative brand for product solutions, Vivilen is in line with the environmental sustainability trend, it gives a new life to recycled polymers, and allows SIBUR to satisfy the growing demand of the processing companies and end users for the increased use of recycled feedstock in production. This innovative solution was developed by SIBUR’s R&D PolyLab facility and tested by some processing companies.

“By creating Vivilen, we are offering a different product to our innovative partners: not a granule with a new set of features, but a sound platform for both forming a response to the public demand for green solutions, and achieving the corporate sustainable development targets,” Sergey Komyshan, Member of the Management Board – Executive Director at SIBUR, says. “These solutions may include joint R&D, supporting materials for end users explaining the benefits of the proposed solutions, and SIBUR’s guarantees with respect to the feedstock quality.”

The new brand will bring together solutions for blow molding, injection molding and heat shrink film production. It can be used to manufacture plastic containers for household chemicals and housekeeping needs, cosmetics and other goods packaging, as well as for producing consumer goods (e.g., clothes hangers). At this stage, the average share of recycled polymers in the Vivilen solutions will account for some 25% of the final product, depending on its type.

SIBUR has already started commercial supplies of the new solutions. Polypropylene and polyethylene production has been launched at the partners’ facilities. In H2 2021, architectural coatings and antivirus dyes of O3 brands – TrioPro and М2 – will be packaged using the Vivilen solution. In Russia, this project is the first example of using recycled landfill plastic to produce packages. In the future, the plan is to expand the product range by bringing in other products, like PET.

Commitment to the circular economy principles and polymer recycling development is one of the key focuses of the SIBUR Sustainable Development Strategy. Recycled polymers have high potential for processing and may be reused 10 and more times. The growing share of recycled polymers in the final products reduces the adverse environmental impact: recycling of the global amount of polymer waste will allow for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.6 billion tons by 2050.
