SIBUR updates its 2025 ESG Strategy

In November 2021, SIBUR’s Board of Directors approved changes to the 2025 Sustainability Strategy.

SIBUR adopted its Sustainability Strategy back in 2019. Since then, the Company has undergone a significant ESG transformation, and life has made its own adjustments. The entire world, including Russia, is now tightening its approaches to climate change: to cut their carbon footprint, countries look to add new regulatory pressure on businesses, developing new standards and rules of responsible consumption which could hardly have been predicted just a couple of years ago. On top of that, by implementing ESG principles the Company itself is transforming, making a revision of our strategy a natural next step.

The revised strategy has an updated post-consumer plastic recycling target. By 2025, SIBUR plans to facilitate the recycling of at least 100 thousand tonnes of polymer waste annually

“Some of the targets were achieved ahead of schedule, while others need to be redefined to become more audacious. There are also some additional areas which compel closer attention and require urgent action on our side. The updated document reflects our ambitious aspirations in carbon neutrality and circular economy,” said Dmitry Konov, Chairman of the Management Board at SIBUR.

The Company is facing the challenge of supporting business growth while avoiding a conflict with the green agenda. Petrochemical production should develop in parallel with cuts to our environmental footprint.

One of the new strategic objectives is to make at least one SIBUR facility carbon neutral by 2025. Several methods are in the works to achieve this, from boosting the energy efficiency of operating processes to implementing carbon capture, use, and storage technologies, to name just a few.

The revised strategy has an updated post-consumer plastic recycling target. By 2025, SIBUR plans to facilitate the recycling of at least 100 thousand tonnes of polymer waste annually as part of its investment projects and through collaboration with partners. For this reason, we have high hopes for the launch of Vivilen rPET, green PET granules containing recycled material, at POLIEF in Blagoveshchensk.

The Company’s management believes that the petrochemical industry has strong industrial, technological, and R&D capabilities to cut its carbon footprint. By 2030, SIBUR plans to produce at least 250 thousand tonnes of low-carbon products and products containing recycled or bio-based materials annually.

Alongside that, we have raised the bar on our green energy ambition. By 2025, SIBUR aims to secure a fivefold increase of the renewable energy share in its energy mix. This target also existed in the previous version of the strategy, but now the baseline year has been moved from 2019 to 2020 to include the impact of the solar power plant launch at the SIBUR-Yug (SIBUR-South) Corporate Health and Wellness Centre in the resort town of Anapa on the Black Sea.
