First batch of MAN produced by SIBUR

This will make it possible to fully meet the domestic demand for MAN in 2022.

In less than 2.5 years, at ZapSibNeftekhim, SIBUR has built a one-of-a-kind plant for the production of maleic anhydride (MAN) which is a vital component in the production of detergents, plasticizers, additives, lacquers, varnishes, fiberglass, artificial stone, unsaturated polyester resins, films, and synthetic fibers. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Before the end of 2022, it is planned to ramp up production to design capacity of 45 ktpa. This amount will secure the domestic demand as well as a buffer stock

The Central Laboratory at ZapSibNeftekhim has confirmed that the produced MAN has a purity content of 99.85%. At the end of March, the first tonnes of MAN were produced for homologation by Russian manufacturers in the construction and fuel component sectors. Before the end of 2022, it is planned to ramp up production to design capacity of 45 ktpa. This amount will secure the domestic demand as well as a buffer stock. MAN will be shipped to producers both in liquid (in special containers) and solid forms.

Maleic anhydride operations in Tobolsk use one of the safest and most environmentally-friendly technologies.

Chairman of the Management Board, CEO of SIBUR LLC:
“We will be able to fully secure the demand of the Russian commodity producers for MAN and mitigate their dependence on overseas suppliers.”

“Maleic anhydride operations in Tobolsk use one of the safest and most environmentally-friendly technologies”, said Vasily Kazakov, Head of MAN Production at ZapSibNeftekhim. “Unlike its alternatives, this technology allows for a more than threefold reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and enables the reuse of waste gas, thus significantly improving the efficiency of the plant. At the same time, the core process equipment used in MAN operations is a closed-loop system, so there is no risk of gas or product leakage in the environment.”

“The launch of domestic MAN production will deliver critical economic, environmental and social effects”, said Chairman of the Management Board, CEO of SIBUR LLC Mikhail Karisalov. “We will be able to fully secure the demand of the Russian commodity producers for MAN and thus mitigate their dependence on overseas suppliers, incentivize import substitution among local companies in various industries, and boost non-resource non-energy exports.”
